Don’t ignore this because it has Valentine’s Day in it

Stating the obvious here: It’s Valentine’s Day.

You know what that means.

Couples everywhere are publically declaring their love for one another by giving each other flowers, candies, stuffed animals ─ the works. Singles, on the other hand, are publically declaring that Feb. 14 is a horrible, corporation-satiated day and therefore anyone participating in the festivities should be shamed into silence.

There’s guilt on all sides of the spectrum.

Those in relationships must deal with the pressures of finding the perfect gift or making sure that the expected romance level is up to par with commercials and holiday-themed sitcom episodes.

Those who are single are reminded by the hour of the red-and-pink-themed day and that they have no one to share it with.

Wake up, people. Change your perspective.

Unfortunately, the evolution of Valentine’s Day has specified so many people that can or cannot participate. I’m here to tell you: Valentine’s Day is for everyone.

No, it’s not the one day a year you’re forced to be romantic, making it excusable to be lazy and insincere the rest of it. No, it’s not a day to complain.

Remember when you were in elementary school and you were required to bring Valentine’s Day cards and/or treats for everyone in your class? And then you went home and read through them all, feeling special because for that day, every friend and classmate showed how much they cared?

What about the friendship aspect of this day? Why can’t we celebrate friends? Or relatives, for that matter?

Take time out of your day today {whether you like it or not} to tell someone special that they mean the world to you. Or simply that you like having them around.

Words are more powerful than some flower or chocolate that you can toss aside once it goes bad.

Thanks to all my friends and family who make me a better person every single day. I appreciate and love all of you. You’re the best. <3
